Pragmatism is a desirable trait for a variety of professional endeavors. When it comes to interpersonal relations, however, people who are pragmatic can be difficult to deal with for their family and friends.
The case exemplars presented in this article illustrate a strong synergy between pragmatism and patient-oriented research (POR). Three fundamental principles of research are discussed, which highlight the innate connection between these two approaches.
1. Concentrate on the facts

Pragmatism is also an ideal framework for patient oriented research as it is a perfect fit for both the essential values of this kind of research: collaborative problem solving and democratic values.

Both of our doctoral research projects required us to interact with respondents in order to understand their participation in informal and undocumented organizational processes. Pragmatism encouraged us to use qualitative methods like interviews and participant observation to investigate these specifics.
